
DeWitt first appeared on stage when she was 13. She earned a Bachelors of Arts degree at Ball State University. The director encouraged her to join UCLA's Department of Theater MFA program. She was awarded the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship along with the Clifton Webb Scholarship. Dewitt declared that she never ever met Abe Vigoda during her time at UCLA. DeWitt is most well-known for her character Janet Wood during the 1977-1984 season of the sitcom Three's Company, a job she obtained after being cast in the second pilot episode of the show. She also portrayed Janet in an episode in 1979 of the spinoff series The Ropers. DeWitt was the only actor to appear in the finale of Three's Company's 1984 season. She was then featured in an episode of Finder of Lost Lovers in 1984. Following that she stopped acting for a long time. In June of 1991 she came back to acting with an in Noises Off at Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse. In the following year, she appeared in the 1995 TV comedy film Spring Fling! Pinky and the Brain aired in 1997, and featured a character based on her. The character was voiced in part by another actress. The actress appeared in an episode of Cybill and made a cameo on the penultimate episode of Living Single. She's appeared in TV shows like Hope Island, The Nick at Nite Holiday Special, and Call of the Wild in 2000.
